Jack Lasseter wins
2018 scholarship

Jack Lasseter, a Middle Tennessee State University junior and nephew of David Lasseter, is the recipient of the $1,000 David Lasseter/MCHS Class of 1969 Scholarship for 2018.

David Lasseter, who is a member of the scholarship committee, abstained from voting for the 2018 recipient. In all, the scholarship committee received three applications for the 2018 award.

Jack Lasseter is a computer science major at MTSU and plans to graduate in spring 2019.

Although he began his studies at MTSU as a chemistry major, he transferred to computer science recently because, he wrote in his application, he finds it "more rewarding."

Since May 2015, Jack Lasseter has worked with Mina Yoon, a research and development scientist in the Center for Nanophase Materials Science at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Jack Lasseter's work at ORNL has earned him credit as a supporting author of an article in the Nano Letters journal of the American Chemical Society. Nano Letters reports on fundamental research in all branches of the theory and practice of nanoscience, the study of extremely small things, and nanotechnology.

The title of the article published in Nano Letters in July 2017 is: "Nonequilibrium Synthesis of TiO2 Nanoparticle 'Building Blocks' for Crystal Growth by Sequential Attachment in Pulsed Laser Deposition."

Among Jack Lasseter's hobbies is an interest in cryptocurrencies or digital currencies such as bitcoin. "Digital money is only the next logical step in (and a prerequisite to) a connected, digital world," he wrote in his application.

Jack Lasseter's career plans include work in industry rather than academia. "I'd love to work full-time at a research lab (like Oak Ridge)," he wrote in his application, "because the Department of Energy funding system usually supports large, groundbreaking projects."

The Lasseter Scholarship goes annually to class members or members of their families. More information about the scholarship is available at the scholarship website.

A fundraising campaign for the scholarship, "$50C for 50," is helping to celebrate the MCHS Class of 1969's upcoming 50th reunion. More information about the "$50C for 50" campaign is available at http://www.tecomm.com/$50Cfor50Brief.html

Donations for the campaign total $1,550.
